Roger's Restaurant Recommendations

Restaurants at which we've eaten in Galena City

Los Aztecas - Has $1.99 margaritas on Wednesdays. Really good food. Really fast service. Really easy parking. It is in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot so you can do your grocery shopping after your meal.

Fried Green Tomatos - Really good down to earth American food. The fried green tomatos are really good. Everyone's bucket list should include "try the fried green tomatoes at Fried Green Tomatoes."

Durty Gurtz - A fun place to bring the family. Interesting signs adorn the walls. It is fun to walk around reading them. They have great shakes (alcoholic and otherwise.) The hamburgers are MASSIVE and really tasty.

Gobbies pizza - Young people love it. Fun and loud environment. Good pizza.

DeSoto House - Oldest hotel in Galena. - Really cool place with great fancy food. They have special events on occassions like New Year's eve celebration and Thanksgiving special dinners.

Log Cabin - Great steaks.

Galena Brewing company - Food is not that great but it is a great place to sample local beers. Live music on occassion. Fun and loud environment.

Vinny Vanucchi's - Great Italian food. Very romantic environment. It is above Main street up a steep stone stairway.

Otto's Restaurant - This is a wonderful place for breakfast. Great atmoshphere. Good food, good prices, great service with a sunny smile, fast delivery. Easy parking because it is located across the river from main street. Parking might be an issue if there is an event going on in the river park. Very busy normally - You should call ahead of time to make sure they can accommodate you. They don't take reservations but call at least 30 minutes prior to your arrival.

Frank O'Dowd's Irish Pub & Grill - Very nice energetic night club type atmoshphere. Live music often. I cannot recommend their fish and chips. The other food seems to be good. Beer is plentiful.

Blaum Brothers - Not really a restaurant, but a distillery. I include it here because I don't yet have a page for distilleries in the area. They offer a guided tour of the distillery, with samples of their products, that is quite fun and interesting.

Nearby restaurants at which we've eaten - outside Galena City

Goldmoor Inn - Two minute walk from Riverview Ranch & Resort (our uphill neighbors). They have 4 EV chargers so you can have dinner while your e-car charges up. They have very high end food and take pride in quality. Be ready to break out your high end credit card. They have a beautiful view of the Mississippi river. It is the same view we have but from a higher angle. You can watch our horses graze from their balcony.

Cajun Jacks - 15 minute drive. - Has a lot of stuffed animals: Bear, Moose, Deer, Aligator, Shark. Interesting placards around the restaurant. Live music on occassion. Great Cajun food and a great atmosphere. It is near the really cool Elizabeth's Grand Antique Mall.

New Diggings General Store-Inn - 31 minute drive north. Great dive bar and restaurant. The Reuben Sandwiches are fantastic. Live music. Fun biker bar.

Timmerman's Supper Club - 27 minutes north in East Dubuque (this side of the river). Fantastic Sunday Brunch. Great view of the river. Fun. Double thumbs up for all you can eat food. It's like a cruise ship. I think the all you can eat is only for Sunday brunch and the rest of the week is to order. But I've only eaten there on Sundays.

Hu Hot Mongolian Grill - 35 minutes north in Dubuque (across the river). All you can eat Mongolian grill. Really fun. Really good. You can season your meal to your own taste and watch the cook grill your meal on a huge cooking slab.

Council Hill Station - 27 minutes north. Not really a restaurant. Great place to go to listen to live music and drink beer with friends in summer. Summer country barn dances at 2 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Country breakfast starting at 9 am on Saturdays. https://www.visitgalena.org/Venue/Council-Hill-Station

Restaurants we want to try out

I want to try to eat at every location in Galena but, the food is so good at the places we know that it is hard for me to get my family to try new places. As I am able, I'll try to sample other restaurants and recommend new places. In the mean time, check out the list of restaurants and bars on Galena's Official Website or see pages 38-40 of Galena's Official Visitors Guide.
